My photography workshops promote the ideals of giving back to the community, exploration, discovery and learning in small groups. The magic of a photography workshop is also it’s locations, learning outcomes, experiences and sharing – and this one is truly magical!

I am excited to be able to offer this unique 10-day photography workshop adventure!

Ontario is a vast province of forests, lakes, waterfalls, rivers and ancient granite. The, Discover Ontario Photography Workshop leaves Ontario’s capital, Toronto behind for a great circle route through iconic Canadian landscapes and Great Lakes shorelines, forests, rapids and rivers. In addition to natural beauty, we will have opportunities for sunrise, sunset and night astrophotography sessions. There are also surprises along the way that will delight you and make this trip especially memorable! We will explore by road, boat and ship to reach and explore iconic landscapes.

This is not an urban workshop. This workshop will focus on landscapes, islands, shorelines, night photography and discovery. The days will be filled with a variety of locations that will challenge you creatively and at the same time, delight you through learning and growth as a photographer.

We will stay in a variety of inns, motels and a lodge along the route. We will enjoy meals together along the way and have plenty of time to share stories and experiences. We will be a small group with a maximum of six participants. This ensures we all learn and fine-tune skills in small groups and one-on-one teaching sessions.

WORKSHOP ITINERARY (subject to change or alteration depending on local weather conditions)

DAY 1 (Friday, June 11)
Toronto – Huntsville
After leaving Toronto, we will stay in Huntsville for two nights. On the way we stop at a beautiful waterfall tucked deep into a lush forest. In Huntsville we will enjoy a relax before setting out later on our first night to photograph the stars in Algonquin Park. The sky tonight will be exceptionally dark as it is the night after the new moon – perfect for photographing the night sky!

DAY 2 (Saturday, June 12)
We will have a later start today after a night under the stars. We stay in the Huntsville/Muskoka area and explore this rugged Canadian Shield granite landscape by photographing locations with rapids, waterfalls and quiet, dense forests.

DAY 3 (Sunday, June 13)
Huntsville – Parry Sound
After a sunrise session, we make the short drive over to Georgian Bay and encounter a huge change in landscape from the rugged granite of the Muskoka to the smooth sweeping vistas of granite that flow into these pristine waters. We will enjoy a sunset over the Sound from the 30 metre, Tower Hill lookout tower. DAY

DAY 4 (Monday, June 14)
Parry Sound
We explore shorelines, rivers and forests as well as have a special model shoot. This is an opportunity to learn off-camera strobe by creating dynamic environmental portraits. Later, aboard the Island Queen, we enjoy a three hour tour through beautiful islands and waterways. From the top deck of the ship, you will have unique opportunities to capture stunning landscapes and shorelines studded with small cabins and luxury mansions. After dinner, we rest up for a second night photography session. The location of this session will amaze you. Bring extra batteries!

DAY 5 (Tuesday, June 15)
Parry Sound – French River
We drive to the French River, an important water navigation route for early fur traders and explorers. Here we stay two nights in a rustic fishing lodge. We explore the area on foot, by canoe and a half-day discovery boat ride with a local guide.

DAY 6 (Wednesday, June 16)
French River
Today will be a quiet day of shooting, working on photo presentations (to be shown on our last night together) and a post-processing workshop. Since this area is very, very dark, we will also head out into the night to do some night sky photography under a dim moon which will leave a soft light over the river and rocks.

DAY 7 (Thursday, June 17)
French River – Tobermory
We leave the stunning beauty of the French River and head to Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron from where we will make the ferry crossing to Tobermory. There is a good chance of some Northern Lights colour in the night sky from Tobermory. The nights are magical from the tip of the Bruce Peninsula.

DAY 8 (Friday, June 18)
Tobermory – Kincardine
As we leave Tobermory, we explore the area called The Grotto on the east side of the Bruce Peninsula on the shore of Georgian Bay. The rocky shore and Grotto are stunning and like no other. We continue down the Lake Huron coast to the lakeside town of Kincardine. There is plenty to distract us along the way to this quint and beautiful town. The lighthouse and shoreline are perfect here at sunset and after

DAY 9 (Saturday, June 19)
Kincardine – Bayfield
Today is the shortest travel day but with a treat in store! Get ready to roll up your sleeves, there is work to be done – after which you will set up for a field product shoot for a local business! Studio lighting and backdrop/props will be supplied! Tonight is our final night together. We will present our 10 days of images in a presentation to the group. Sharing in this way is an inspiring way to learn from others as well as relax and share stories of our experiences together.

DAY 10 (Sunday, June 20)
Bayfield – Toronto
Today we return to Toronto so people can connect with flights or stay on in the city to explore a more urban setting. Along the way, there may be a special treat that might happen! I’m still working on that! If it comes together it will be a fantastic way to end the workshop with one last experience that few will have experienced!

Prior to our departure, I will send participants a Zoom meeting invitation. We will meet and get to know each other. During our Zoom chat you will have the opportunity to ask any questions and inquire about anything regarding the workshop, accommodations, equipment needed or required, and anything else that is on your mind.

Spencer’s workshops widen your approach to photography as he works with you in a multitude of genres — landscape, street, travel, documentary. This approach strengthens your skillset for visual storytelling! Spencer is so generous with his teaching, working with each student at their level until they are proficient. You will enter as a student yet emerge as a friend!
– Elle Colquitt (Knoxville, Tennessee)

Spencer Wynn, in addition to being a superb photographer, knows how to teach. He is generous with his knowledge and infinitely patient. He not only teaches the technical aspects of photography but also the art of photography. He taught me how to “see” in a unique way that I never would have considered. One of the things I most appreciate about Spencer is his willingness to share everything he knows and to explain it in a manner that makes sense.
– Ann Miller (Ohio, USA)

On the road with Spencer, you profit from his passion to compose: that includes finding a better viewpoint to tell the story you want. This might include some more steps, but each one is worth it to become a better observer. His profound knowledge makes each conversation a vivid exchange about photography, art and culture and all this helps the personal development. Would I book a workshop with Spence again? Immediately!
– Mirjam Lorek (Switzerland)

A visual journalist with over 30 years in story meetings and newsrooms, Spencer has developed a keen sense of storytelling through compelling visual narratives. It is on the streets and exploring new places and new cultures that Spencer feels most alive in Turkey  – life is lived on the streets and there are endless stories to photograph here.

From the High Arctic to India to Europe and Asia, Spencer has sought out visuals that speak to human interest stories, beauty and culture. Spencer has restricted the number of participants to a minimum in order to maximize personal instruction, learning and experimenting.
